KZN Licence Plate Change: What Fleet Owners Need to Know
If your vehicles are registered in KwaZulu-Natal, an important regulatory change is approaching, one that requires timely action to avoid penalties and operational disruptions. All vehicle owners in KwaZulu-Natal have until 30 November 2025 to transition to the province’s new licence plate system. This change forms part of an effort to standardise and modernise vehicle registration across the region.
From 1 December 2025, all old KZN registration numbers will no longer be valid. Operating a vehicle with an outdated licence plate after this date will be considered an offence under the National Road Traffic Act.
What Happens When You Renew?
The transition process has been designed to be straightforward. When you renew your vehicle licence before the deadline, you will automatically be issued a new registration number that complies with the updated format. This means there’s no need for a separate application for the new number, however, you will still need to ensure that your vehicle is fitted with the correct, updated licence plates once the new registration has been assigned.
